The Power of the #MeToo Movement

trigger warning: this post mentions sexual assault.

Women and girls around the world have mobilized into a sisterhood in rebellion to the culture of protection that allowed them to suffer at the hands of men who took advantage of them. Meet the #MeToo Movement.

All over the internet, empowered women have shared their stories of sexism, gender inequality and sexual assault in solidarity with their sisters who have suffered under the patriarchy.

It’s for every woman who was called a bitch because she was assertive.

It’s for every woman who spent hours rehearsing a speech before asking for a raise from her boss.

It’s for every woman who never consented to be touched there.

It’s for every woman who said “no” and it didn’t stop.

It’s for every woman who wore a short skirt on a night out and had to hear “she was asking for it,” the next morning.

It’s for every woman who was walking home alone at night.

It’s for every woman who felt ashamed for not wanting to have a baby that young.

It’s for every woman who was told their only job in life was to stay home.

It’s for every woman who makes less than her male counterpart for the same work.

It’s for every woman who was harassed on the street.

It’s for every woman.

Through the inclusivity of the movement, women seem to be getting the recognition they deserve. They are being heard loud and clear in the streets and through tweets. The movement is proof that an empowered woman is the most dangerous weapon against the continuation of a culture where women aren’t valued, respected or treated equally.
